OU SPS Spring Picnic!

What: A FREE picnic for all students and faculty as a final get together before some students graduate and faculty retire. Some SPS business will be finalized at this event, as well. We will be grilling hamburgers (and maybe some hotdogs) and chips, drinks, etc. will be provided. We may even set up some outdoor games.

When: Monday, April 26th at 4pm (tentative)

Where: North end of the South Oval by the Bizzell statue.

SPS Big Event Sign-Up

Sign-up in the student lounge (303) by the end of the day on Thursday, March 4th to participate with SPS in the campus-wide Big Event.


What is the Big Event?

It's a campus wide volunteer event where student organizations take time to give back to the community and surrounding areas.

This year Big Event will be on Saturday, April 10th. We will meet on the North Oval at about 8:30 am. Lunch and T-shirts will be provided.

We will not find out where we will be helping out until after we have turned in our volunteer forms. Last year OU SPS drove up to Spencer, Oklahoma and helped out at a community garden up there.

Dr. Gregory Earle will be coming from the University of Texas at Dallas to meet with our undergraduate physics students before his colloquium presentation on "Small Satellite Solutions to Problems in Near--Earth Space Science" later in the day. Don't miss this opportunity to meet him before the colloquium and ask questions about the subject!

Pop and Pizza will be provided.

OU SPS Valentine's Party!

Thursday, Feb. 11th, 2010 from Noon to 2pm in the student lounge (303).

Come make your own Valentine's Bag from the supplies in the lounge up through the date of the party. We'll then host a Valentine's exchange during the party so you can share candy and cards with all of your fellow physics friends. Please bring enough valentines to share on the day of the party so that no one gets left out.

We will be providing punch, candy, and board games!

Tues Nov 17 @ 4pm in room 303 (student lounge).

We will have both board games (chess, Apples to Apples and a few new games) and video games (Super Smash Bros. Brawl, etc). Snacks and pop will be provided.

Take a break in between homework and exams and come join us for a little bit of relaxation!

We will be competing against other student organizations, as well as greek row, in the Winter Welcome Week Toys for Tots toy drive. The competition will begin Nov 15 and last through Dec 1. Our box will be located by the physics and astronomy office on the first floor of Nielsen Hall. Here's the blurb from the organizers to give you an idea about what items we will be collecting:

    "In honor of the upcoming Winter Olympics and theme of Winter Welcome Week 2010, "Let the Games Begin", we are also focusing on providing not only toys but sports equipment. The Winter Olympics will be starting in February and what better way to get people excited about sports and giving?! Individuals can donate anything from basketballs, jump ropes, tennis racquets, any type of equipment that can help contribute to a child's entertainment with athletic participation."

Hi All,
Next semester I will be teaching a course in Optical Physics (4243/5223). It will be offered on TU and TH from 2:00-3:15 pm. Due to a scheduling snafu the course does not appear yet on the electronic course registration. If you would like to enroll you can either see Debbie Barnhill to sign up or wait until it is put up onto the registration site.

The course will cover the basics of geometric optics, physical optics (interference and diffraction), and some quantum and nonlinear optics. The book that I will use is Saleh and Teich, Fundamentals of Photonics. I believe the course is useful for anyone who uses optics in their research. It is only offered every other year so if you are interested I encourage you to enroll next semester. For the undergraduates, this counts as one of your slash listed requirements.

Just a reminder to all OU SPS members that the departmental Halloween party is this Friday, Oct 30th, at 4pm in the student lounge (room 303). There will be free food, drinks, games, physics demos, a costume contest, and our famous Frozen Pumpkin Drop from the roof of Nielsen Hall. We hope to see everyone there!
